What To Bring On An Alaskan Cruise

Posted on August 31, 2024October 3, 2024 by Emilio Garza

When gearing up for an Alaskan cruise, packing may not be as easy as it seems. The unpredictable weather, paired with a variety of activities onboard and onshore, made it a real puzzle. Here, we’ll share a comprehensive packing list to help you.

Weather Considerations and Essential Clothing

Alaska’s weather in August is like a mood ring – constantly changing. During the day, temperatures can range from 60-70°F, while nights can drop into the 40s. That’s why dressing in layers is non-negotiable.

Start with the basics: fleece-lined leggings and waterproof pants for those potentially rainy and chillier days. Jeans and shorts also deserve a spot in your suitcase for warmer and more casual days. And don’t forget to pack a variety of shirts – tank tops, short-sleeve, and long-sleeve can keep you comfortable no matter the temperature swings.

It’s also smart to add a combination of sweatshirts, hoodies, and sweaters for that extra cozy layer when you need it. A waterproof jacket with a hood and a fleece jacket will be your best friend for those unexpected rainy spells.

On the formal side, if your cruise includes dress nights, make sure to pack a neat dress or a sports coat. And to fight that extra chill, thermal underwear is a must. Remember your pajamas, underwear, and wool socks too!

Finish off with gloves, a scarf, and a hat to keep warm on those brisk nights or excursions. Don’t forget extras like a belt, bathing suit, cover-up, and flip-flops for the onboard pool or a dip at a port. Dress shoes and comfortable shoes for those formal nights – tennis shoes, hiking boots, and waterproof footwear – will keep your feet happy.

Accessories, Essentials, and Final Packing Tips

Beyond clothing, a few accessories and essentials can elevate your cruise experience. Start with a small purse or anti-theft bag to keep your belongings safe. Sunglasses and sunscreen are must-haves to protect against the sun when it makes an appearance. Don’t forget binoculars for whale watching and some solid camera gear to capture those breathtaking Alaskan landscapes.

Electronic gear like a cell phone battery charger and a multi-USB charger will keep your devices powered up. Over-the-counter medications and motion sickness prevention can save the day if you start feeling queasy on those choppy waters.

An extra fold-up bag is a brilliant idea for carrying home any souvenirs. If your cruise makes international stops, don’t leave your passport behind. A little extra tip – check if your ship offers laundry facilities. This can be a game-changer, letting you pack a bit lighter.

Remember, this list can shift depending on your travel needs and the month you’re cruising. Hopefully, this guide takes the stress out of packing and leaves you more time to dream about breathtaking glaciers and northern lights!

I have always wanted to do an Alaskan Cruise, but instead have had to settle for one from Orlando in December, as that is when I will be in America and I think the Alaskan Cruises are best taken in the middle of the year.

Packing for four seasons is a bit of a pain, but at least this ensures your comfort and you can concentrate on enjoying your cruise rather than worrying about getting too hot or too cold. Sketchers are my must sneaker to take on any trip and the waterproof ones are best for this type of tour.

Thanks for sharing your travel plans! An Alaskan Cruise is definitely a bucket-list experience, but a cruise from Orlando in December sounds fantastic too—perfect for escaping the winter chill! You’re right about packing; it’s smart to be prepared for all kinds of weather. And Sketchers are a great choice—comfort and practicality rolled into one! Wishing you a smooth sail and an amazing time exploring!

    HI!

I think an Alaskan cruise would be the only cruise I could get my wife to take. We’ve talked about it, and some of our friends have gone on the cruise.

This post is incredibly helpful for anyone planning an Alaskan cruise. I appreciate how you’ve broken down everything from essential clothing to accessories, making it so much easier to pack smartly for the unpredictable weather. I wouldn’t have thought of packing binoculars or a multi-USB charger, but now they’re definitely on my list. Also, the tip about checking for laundry facilities is genius – less luggage, more room for souvenirs! Thanks for sharing these practical tips. Can’t wait to see those glaciers and experience Alaska’s stunning scenery firsthand!
